What Does a Radiologic Technologist Do?

Radiologic technologists utilize X-Ray, CT, and other imaging machines to capture scans of the patient’s body. Also called radiographers, people in this position assist physicians by operating the equipment, preparing the patient, and minimizing the radiation exposure to the patient.

Within the sector of radiology technologist jobs, you can further specialize into a specific area of radiology, like nuclear medicine or mammography. For general radiologic technologist hiring, a specialization is not necessary.

A radiology technologist may work in a hospital, clinic, lab, or other medical facility that contains the necessary imaging equipment. Allied health professionals in this position usually work with a Radiologist, the doctor who interprets the images taken and diagnoses the patients.

Requirements to be a Radiologic Technologist
  • Be a certified radiologic technologist: obtain an American Registry of Radiologic Technologists certification
  • Have any additional license or certification required by the state you plan to work in
  • Show passion for patient care through strong communication abilities
  • Understand the equipment you will be operating, from turning it on to complex scanning
  • Maintain a cohesive knowledge of human anatomy and scanning practices
